Competition:

Each year, information is made available regarding the estimated number of applicants, number of posts available in specialty training and the general outlook at each stage of specialty training.

This information is available via the MMC website, following the link through Specialty Training. It is possible to break the information held on this website down further by specialty, location and level.

Points to note:

Before researching into specialty training competition ratios, ensure you:

  • Give yourself some uninterrupted time to look at the information and interpret it correctly
  • Read any guidelines on ‘How to use the competition ratio tables’
  • Read the summary before looking at the detailed tables. This may provide reassurance or may indicate that a Plan B is needed.

It would not be wise to make your decision based solely on the information in the competition ratios tables.

Application Processes:

Deanery websites hold a wealth of information about application processes, whether recruitment is national or local and answer 'Frequently Asked Questions'. There is often a point of contact for questions when you can’t find the answer elsewhere.

Vacancies:

All vacancies are advertised on the NHS Jobs website. This includes specialty recruitment, so it is advisable to check this and consider setting up email alerts.

Trusts in the Severn area also use NHS Jobs for recruitment to locum posts. (LAT and LAS posts).

Up to date information on recruitment is also carried on Deanery websites, so ensure you have these added to your favourites and check them regularly.

Further detailed information can be found in the Applicant Guide, accessed via the MMC website.
