Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

The use of social media (twitter, facebook, Linked In, pinterest, foursquare, blogs, microblogging sites, social networks, etc) has changed the way that the world communicates. Medical Education has been slow to respond to using it despite the clear benefits that it can bring. This workshop will help you fully understand what social media is, how and why we might use it in medical education and how to get advantages from the different forms of it that are available.

Speaker details:

Andrew Smith MCIPR is Managing Director of escherman, a specialist online PR, SEO and analytics consultancy. With a career spanning 29 years of public relations and journalism, he has developed and implemented many highly successful strategic PR and marketing communications programmes for some of the world's biggest brands including IBM, CapGemini, MySQL, Apple (FileMaker) and Checkpoint. Described as the "de facto godfather of PR blogging", he is a regular speaker and media commentator on the integration of PR with social media, search optimisation and analytics. He is also co-author of two bestselling social media books, Share This and Share This Too, and a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relation's Social Media Panel.

Aim of this master class:

To raise understanding about the range of social media and networking sites currently in popular and professional use and explore how we could effectively utilise it in postgraduate medical education.

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • List the range of social media tools and products available to medical educators for professional and personal use and describe the advantages and limitations of each
