Overview
An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.
Aim
A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.
Reasons for offering this Master Class:
Medicine is recognised as one of the most stressful professions. With financial constraints, patient pressures and BREXIT it is highly likely that there is not going to be any significant improvement in this situation for the foreseeable future. Junior medical staff are by no means immune to this stress and indeed added stress with changes in medical training and junior doctors training. As part of their educational and clinical supervision it is key that stress recognition and management is part of the supervisors repertoire.
Speaker details:
Mr James Coulston is a vascular consultant at Musgrove Park. He has significant experience in delivering human factors training and systems analysis. He runs a human factors consultancy and has extensive experience in postgraduate education and course development.
Aim of this master class:
To understand stress associated with the significant changes involved with medical training and how we, as supervisors, can support our trainees.
Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:
- Outline the relevant speed of change and insecurity of medical training.
- Understand how to recognise and approach trainees struggling with stress.
- Understand the concept of resilience and strategies to increase resilience to protect our junior workforce.
