Speakers:

Dr Liz Spencer, Consultant Anaesthetist, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust

Qualified from Southampton and worked in Weymouth, Bath, Australia, Peru, Derby, Nottingham, Bristol and Plymouth before becoming a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Gloucester in 1993.

Already undertaking the role of Intensive Care Educational Tutor, Dr Spencer became Clinical Tutor in Gloucester in 2000 and Director of Medical Education in 2004. Dr Spencer established the two year Foundation Programme in Gloucestershire in 2004 ad created the new speciality training programmes in 2007.

Dr Spencer established the Gloucestershire ALERT, CcRISP and APLS courses and wrote the Professional and Generic Skills course for doctors in training which has now been adopted by the Severn Deanery. Dr Spencer also established a “Train the Trainer” programme for consultant and other permanent professional staff.

Dr Spencer joined the National Association of Clinical Tutors (NACT) UK Council in 2002, became an Officer in 2004 and Chair in 2006. Dr Spencer led the project on structuring postgraduate medical education within Trusts promoting the role of Director of Medical Education. Dr Spencer works with Deans, Colleges, PMETB & NHS Employers to provide the Trust perspective on all aspects of Postgraduate training and more recently revalidation & the SAS doctors development.

  • 1993 – 1997. Staff Nurse, Cardiac Surgery and ITU, Bristol Royal Infirmary. Involved in the Bristol Heart Babies enquiry as staff member and through legal department of the BRI
  • 1996 - 98 Barrister training and practice London and Bristol
  • Called to the Bar March 1998, Middle Temple
  • 1998 Clinical Risk and Litigation Manager, City Hospitals NHS Trust, Birmingham
  • 2000 appointed Head of Legal Services for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,
  • Involved in teaching clinical staff in house, publishing on legal issues in nursing and medicine, and remaining close to nursing and medical staff on the wards. Deals with all Court work for the Trust involving inquests, the Coroner, Police and Social Services. Trust Data Protection Officer and lead for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
