This half day workshop will provide participants with a framework for effective career discussions, underpinned by an understanding of some of the wider issues affecting career choice and change. It will be delivered by an external trainer, Dr Melanie Jones, who retired from Clinical Anaesthesia to become an independent medical career coach and trainer. She delivers workshops across the UK to develop and enhance career support skills in educational supervisors.

Previous roles include:

  • Associate Postgraduate Dean for Careers and LTFT in Wales
  • Co-chair of the UK Medical Careers Planning Group at DH
  • Special Advisor for Careers at UKFPO
  • President of the Medical Women's Federation
  • LTFT advisor at Royal College of Anaesthetists

She completed her MA in Managing Medical Careers in July 2013. Her special interests include the careers of women doctors and support for doctors facing career dilemmas.

By the end of the session each participant will be able to:

  1. Understand the significance and value of regular career discussions.
  2. Identify relevant sources of information.
  3. Understand when and where to refer for specialist support.
  4. Develop an effective framework for career discussions.
  5. Structure a constructive discussion with trainees with unrealistic career ideas.

The programme will cover:

  • Definition of careers support
  • Careers advice in context: an overview of career decision theory
  • The changing medical career structure and its impact upon career development needs
  • Frameworks for effective discussions
  • Case studies
  • Dealing with unrealistic and/ or challenging behaviour and resources: what, where, who and how.
