Master Class for Senior Educators - Simulation Advances

Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

 

Reasons for offering the Master Class:

Simulation education has been used extensively throughout the South West for over a decade with mannequins and other pieces of high tech equipment purchased by many Acute Trusts and the creation of simulation training facilities within many hospitals. Simulation and its related training approach Technology Enhanced Education are regarded as key developments for the future training of clinicians as they allow skills and professional clinical understanding to be developed and practiced without any harm to patients.  By using these educational techniques risk situations and newly designed processes and procedures can be tried out on simulated patients and in complex organisational role plays.  The situations or processes that can be represented through simulation range from simple and straightforward, such as injecting an orange with a real needle and syringe, through to the highly intricate mirroring of healthcare organisational processes implementing patient pathways or emergencies involving a number of departments in a busy acute hospital.  This Master class will inform us of recent advances and innovations in the use of simulation  based educational techniques and explore how we might utilise them in our postgraduate medical educational activities.

 

Speakers details:

Dr Tom Gale is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Plymouth NHS Trust and Director of Assessment at PUPSMD. He has a particular interest in using simulation for assessment and developed a selection centre format for recruitment which utilised stations incorporating simulation & work related tasks alongside more traditional interview methods.  Present roles in assessment include: member of Royal College of Anaesthetists Recruitment Committee, Director of Clinical Skills and Simulation (PUPSMD) and member of the HEE Specialty Selection Pilot core working group. He was recently awarded the "President's Commendation" for his contribution to national assessment methods for the Royal College of Anaesthetists.  He is also Chair of the Simulation Training Steering Group in Peninsula and Lead for Undergraduate Clinical Skills PCMD and is an Associate Professor at Plymouth University where he runs Masters level programmes on simulation in medical education.

 

Aim:

To inform participants of current practice and advances in using simulation in postgraduate medical education and explore how it can be effectively and more fully used in the South West.
