Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

A number of recent national reports have identified that doctors are working in an era when target driven priorities and other organisational factors have led to low staff morale with a feeling of loss of status and autonomy.  This has had a profound effect on many clinical and healthcare teams with many of them showing signs of stress and low cohesion in working practices.  This master class considers the factors that create team ineffectiveness and explores how to recognise and deal with these.  It will be led by two leading psychologists who have worked extensively with poorly performing clinical teams for many years.

Speaker details:

Dr Megan Joffe is an organisational and clinical psychologist who works mainly in the assessment and development of senior people, including doctors. She is particularly interested in how the individual and the system influence one another and through her work with NCAS and with clinicians from all over the UK Megan has become a leading authority in doctors and teams in difficulty.  Her experience extends to the development of leadership teams, leading change, and experiential learning. She is also an executive coach and facilitator.

Dr Jenny King is the former Director of Edgecumbe Health and is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist with a doctorate in Psychology from Oxford University. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.  Jenny has worked with doctors for most of her career; assessing leadership potential; developing team working, and supporting Trusts with medical appraisal and enhanced Consultant appointments processes.   Her main interest is in the psychological assessment and support of doctors and clinical teams.

Aim of this master class:

To understand how to recognise dysfunctional healthcare teams and explore the reasons for this and identify ways to tackle them

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the warning signs that indicate a team is disrupted and not working well
  • Describe the causes and contributory factors that stop a clinical team for working effectively
  • Summarise the impact of personality and behaviour on team functioning
  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of medical and educational leaders in handling teams at work
  • List a number of practical steps and potential courses of action for addressing team dysfunctions
