Overview

An academic series of expert classes mainly held at Deanery House in Bristol on topical and emerging areas of importance in medical education for Postgraduate Medical Education. They are open to HEE Southwest, Postgraduate Medical Educational Teams, Educators in Trusts and GP Trainers. Global and nationally important speakers and subject experts are sought and invited.

Aim

A programme of faculty development for senior educators in the Severn and Peninsula to assist in creating a consistent understanding about current developments and issues affecting medical education.

 

Reasons for offering this Master Class:

Networking through meeting and keeping in contact with other professionals and people both in our sphere of expertise and outside it is a great way to develop work contacts, find out new ideas, stimulate future  possibilities and develop links with organisations and individuals that can help us now and in the future.  As society and work continues to become more complex and fragmented actively engaging in networks through conferences, meetings, social media and other ways of connecting can help you gather updated information on your work related interests, find out about the latest trends in your professional field and collect more opportunities and develop possibilities. Regular use of a communication styles and power inventory with trainee and qualified clinicians shows that networking is often the method of professional development least used by doctors.

 

Speaker details:

Clare Davis is a senior training consultant principally working with the Referral Institute which is an organisation that provides experienced consultation and tools to help business and healthcare professionals gain success through relationship-based referral marketing and networking.  She has developed and run a highly successful series of workshops for Severn PGME on communication skills, assertiveness and personality based behavioural styles.

 

Aim of this master class:

How to engage with and be understood by others and ask the right questions when networking for professional gain.

 

Objectives: by the end of the master class participants will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and value of networking
  • Resolve any concerns about networking
  • Map out the different arenas in which to network with NHS Managers, healthcare professionals and other Doctors
  • Make an impact within the first 30 seconds with people you are networking with
  • Plan how to effectively use your networking skills and techniques
  • Identify what makes for good networking etiquette
  • Describe how the Deanery will further support networking development both individually and collectively
