All participants went away with a piece of reflection to put in their portfolio for appraisal and revalidation, and these are some of their comments.

  • “Reflection for appraisal is more than just recording knowledge/facts… I was reluctant to do it, but feel more positive after today.” “I do not have to fear reflective writing or find it daunting to attempt it.”
  • “My main learning is to reflect frequently and briefly, review reflections later and re-reflect, and to reflect on good things as well as less-good.”
  • “It helped me to know more about technical options for reflective writing, e.g. voice recognition software.”
  • “I use a CPD tracker on my iPhone which helps me reflect as I go along.”
  • “’Mapping technique is easy, fun and efficient. Colours help. Reflection isn’t such a bugbear as it was when I arrived.”
  • “The main learning I will take away today is to be active in the reflective process and set time aside for it.”
  • “I will look out for more events I could document in my reflective portfolio and I will improve on my writing reflectively.” “Format doesn’t matter. Quality and content are important.”
  • “I need to do this, I can’t hide anymore!”
  • “Really, really useful!” “Please organise further similar courses for our colleagues.”

“Appraisal and revalidation for all doctors includes reflection as a key component of continuing professional development. What does this mean in practice?”
