Interview Guidance

The interviews will be held on the 28th June 2019 at Health Education South West, Severn Postgraduate Medical Education.

Travel – Getting to the venue

Arriving by car:   

  • There will be no available parking for visitors at Park House (other than disabled spaces).  There is pay and display parking at Stoke Gifford Park and Ride, Hunts Ground Rd, BS34 8PU which is approximately four minutes’ walk to Park House.  You can only pay for this parking via the ‘pay by phone’ app, by calling 0330 400 7275 or booking online at . The parking location is ID 8485.

Preparing for your interview 

You will be required to bring the following to your interview: 

  • Documentation for Identity checks (for verification of your identity & qualification) 

  • A paper version of your portfolio which will form part of the interview process.  – Please ensure there is no patient identifiable documentation included within the portfolio 

  • Two references 

Identity Checks 

We are required to carry out checks to verify your identity and eligibility to apply for this post.  The checks will be carried out prior to your interview and do NOT form part of the structured interview process.  

Please provide the original and also BRING A COPY of the evidence listed below.  We will verify the original and return it to you.  The copy will be retained. 

Proof of Identification 

  • Passport 

Evidence of Eligibility 

  • FRCS (Part I & Part II if applicable) 

  • RITA/ARCP (from most recent assessment)


  • The references will also be collected at this time.

Paper portfolio 

Please bring a paper version of your portfolio. The portfolio will form part of the interview process.  When compiling the portfolio please ensure there is no patient identifiable documentation included. 

Suggested contents for your paper portfolio 

  • Curriculum Vitae – including a list of training posts (dates, places, specialty and grade) i.e. beginning with most recent post.  

  • Validated Logbook with summary sheet 

  • Evidence of Research 

  • Evidence of Audit 

  • Evidence of Teaching & Training and Feedback 


As part of the national application process candidates have been asked to provide the details of two referees.  

Please bring two references, including one from your current or most recent educational supervisor (ES) and one from your Training Programme Director (TPD) or equivalent. 

You will need to approach your referees and obtain the references well in advance as you need to bring them with you to the interview.  They will be collected at the pre-employment check prior to the interview.

Stage 1 

On arrival at the interviews please report to reception on the first floor. 

Shortly after your arrival pre-employment checks will be carried out by a member of the recruitment team.  This will include your proof of Identity, verifying ARCP and qualifications. Your references will also be collected at this time as well as your paper portfolio so that the portfolio can be reviewed by the panel as part of the selection process.  

Stage 2 

The interview, itself has three stations and all candidates will progress through each station.   

Each interview station will last 15 minutes and there will be two/three interviewers in each who will both ask questions and mark.  There may also be an observer who does not mark. 

Each station will focus on a different competence.  

The whole process will may take up to 2½ so please take this into account when make travel arrangements.
