South West PGME Patient Safety Fellowships 2023

Academic Clinical Fellows/Lecturers

Recruitment Timetable

Apply from 23 October 2023
Closing date 10 November 2023

NHSE working across the Southwest (NHSE-SW) is delighted to announce six training secondment opportunities in partnership with Momus Safety Limited. Momus Safety is a learning organisation based in the SW specialising in patient safety, clinical human factors, and non-technical skills training.

Successful applicants will be supported through the 12-month secondment period at 0.1 WTE (half a day per week) with a number of focused training days alongside project work in the host trust and attendance at the Bristol Patient Safety Conference.

The knowledge and skills acquired through these posts will provide experience in methodologies around patient safety as well as a planned publishable project around patient safety. It is anticipated that at the end of the fellowship, the fellows will be equipped to advance their skills around patient safety and to promote and disseminate learning around patient safety and clinical human factors. As part of the fellowship there is also the opportunity to attend a patient safety/non-technical skills ‘training the trainers’ course and the fellows will be expected to become Faculty in future regional patient safety introductory courses going forward.

It is hoped the fellow would have attended the NHSE-SW/Momus Safety ‘Patient Safety, Human Factors and Non-technical Skills Course’ for Core/Speciality Doctors in Training (run through NHSE-SW). If they have not attended this, then they would be strongly encouraged to attend the courses planned on the 6th December 2022 (information on the deanery websites).

Programme:

-Fellowship to commence in February / March 2024 for a period of 1 year. The fellowship would run alongside clinical training.

-Fellows would be supported through this process by one of two consultant mentors with designated time.

-Fellows would spend half a day a week (0.1 WTE) studying patient safety and working on a relevant project within their base organisation, as well as attending the training days as detailed below:

-Fellows will attend four training days during the year:

  • Development of human factors skills: Run by Laura Pickup (Fellow of the chartered institute of ergonomics and human factors and ergonomics, CIEHF) this day is a focused day on human factors methodologies used in pathways assessment and improvement.
  • Advanced Non-technical Skills Day: Building on NTS explored in the introductory patient safety and NTS session this day will look at advanced skills in communication, and teamworking and will explore concepts such as situational awareness and leadership.
  • Simulation of patient safety: Well established training the trainer’s course in simulation for patient safety. Debrief skills and simulation scenario planning will be included within this multidisciplinary course.
  • Training the Trainers for Patient Safety course: Course to provide skills needed to deliver introductory to patient safety course for core surgical Doctors in Training. Allow opportunity to explore some of the safety concepts discussed during the year to greater depth and, if appropriate, to join NHSE-SW faculty for delivering NTS courses moving forward.

-In addition to the above, the fellows will be funded to attend the Bristol Patient Safety Conference. It is hoped that the patient safety project delivered during the fellowship 23/24 will be submitted and presented at the 2025 conference.

Logistics:

-The post is available for 0.1 WTE (0.5 days per week). It is flexible and according to negotiated time out of clinical work. The remaining sessions (0.9 WTE) will be spent working on your existing clinical speciality.

-You will work half day a week on your current salary terms on the secondment, whilst continuing to spend the remainder of your clinical time working with your current employer and participating in contractually agreed out of hours commitment.

-The 0.1 WTE of the basic salary will be paid to their employer for the time they spend on the fellowship.

-Working days can be flexible, dependent on the clinical commitment, but the Postgraduate Doctor in Training is expected to be available to conduct their seconded work on 0.5 days a week. Flexibility in the work schedule is permitted with your supervisor’s agreement.

-If you are currently LTFT and you wish to continue with this then a reduction in clinical commitment will be needed in line with training requirements for progression.

-The Postgraduate Medical Education Office fellowship will not be recognised for clinical training and consequently an extension to your agreed training may be needed and agreed with your TPD.

  • You will be asked to present (and/or show a poster) at our annual South West Fellowship Showcase Event (this may take place during your Fellowship or in the months following)
  • You will have access to our South West Fellowship SharePoint Site (not in public domain) to build contacts and share your work. This will include a knowledge bank summarising each Fellowship Project.
  • You will receive a monthly email about opportunities.

We will keep you on the mailing list for the duration of your Fellowship. We will store the information you submit (such as your email address) securely and use it only for the purposes of informing you of relevant NHSE Fellowship events and opportunities.
