Getting Support and Guidance Through Mentoring

 

The quality of support you receive during your period as a Foundation Doctor, Core Trainee or Specialist Trainee is vital to enable you to get the best out of your future career.

To foster this, Health Education England (working across the Southwest) has set up a confidential mentoring programme for Doctors in training as an independent source of support outside of the assessment process.

Mentoring is a process where a mentor meets a mentee on a regular or occasional basis to help the mentee in their personal and professional development.

Research has shown that mentoring has many benefits for mentees:

Most mentors are Consultants or Senior Specialty Trainees who give their time voluntarily because they have a genuine desire to help. They give their time voluntarily because they have a genuine desire to help.

Peer Mentoring

Peer Mentoring is provided by trainees who are ST3 and above and GPST2 from across Health Education England (working across the southwest) who are committed to support a mentoring role.   

The purpose of the programme is to provide equal access to impartial, external, high quality mentoring for all junior doctors who are in training within the footprint of Health Education England (working across the south west). Through this, you can be supported to grow in your self-development and manage your journey to fulfilling your individual aims and objectives.

Benefits of peer mentoring schemes for mentees include the following:  

  • Increased confidence, self-awareness and assertiveness;  
  • Increased empowerment to enhance decision making  
  • Identification of goals to establish a sense of direction   
  • Building resilience and improvement in the individual’s ability to deal with change  
  • Valuable insights to help focus career decisions

COVID-19 Mentoring Scheme: To support trainees helping with the national response to the Pandemic

 

Health Education England (working across the southwest) is acutely aware that our trainees will have had no past experience to prepare for a crisis such as the pandemic and as such will be involved in  incredibly challenging decisions, as well as facing anxieties around their own health, their families and changes to their education and training plans.  

A number of retired doctors have volunteered their services to us as Mentors to support Postgraduate  Education and Training during this incredibly challenging time to support you.

The scheme aims to build your resilience and  to enable you to feel safe and supported so that you can continue to work and provide excellent care for our patients.
