Whether you would like to have a mentor or to be a mentor to other doctors, there are introductory and more advanced workshops available. 

Introduction to Mentoring Skills workshop 1

These courses currently apply to Peninsula Consultants, SAS Doctors and Senior Trainees

This half day workshop is aimed at giving the participants the skills and understanding that they need in order to start developing a mentoring relationship. It is aimed at anyone involved with educational supervision who may need to mentor a trainee.

Content will include:

  • Establish what mentoring is and how it differs from other forms of helping for example counselling or tutoring
  • Identify skills that are appropriate for mentoring
    • Active listening
    • Not judging
    • Clarifying
    • Reflecting back
    • Giving positive feedback
  • Use of pair work to practice these skills
  • Introduce the stages of a mentoring relationship
  • Look at 2 models of mentoring/helping from Gerard Egan & Carl Rogers
  • Explore how to make a start in mentoring
  • Look at potential mentoring contracts

This workshop is intended to help develop mentoring skills. However, we hope that interested individuals may then wish to join the Peninsula Postgraduate Medical Education project offering a mentoring service for doctors in training referred by Peninsula Postgraduate Medical Education. The programme recruits volunteer medical Consultants to act as mentors, provide training for mentors and establish links between suitable mentors and mentees. The training programme is based upon best practice in mentoring for members of the medical profession and will be delivered locally in a series of workshops. .

Developing your Mentoring Skills workshop 2

This half day workshop is for those who have attended introductory training in mentoring or who are acting in the role of mentor and would like to further develop their skills.

The workshop includes:

  • Exploring issues and problems with the mentee and understanding the mentee's perspective
  • Challenging - the art of gentle challenge without jeopardising the relationship
  • Focusing - helping the mentee to focus and prioritise when there are a number of issues they want to resolve
  • Objective setting - helping the mentee to set SMART objectives and make an action plan
  • Mentors getting support and supporting each other

This workshop includes video scenarios, pair work and case studies, and is fully interactive.

Peer Mentoring Training

This course if for trainees ST3 and above and GPST2 across Health Education England (working across the Southwest) who are committed to working as a mentor with other junior trainees across different specialties.

You will learn the following:

  • To understand how to use mentoring skills as a mentor
  • To clarify the types of Mentoring HEE now offers
  • To equip you with the knowledge and skills of recognised best practice for mentoring, based on the recommendations of the European Mentoring & Coaching Competencies (EMCC) .
  • To understand the mentoring process
  • To explore how mentoring can create a positive learning environment and contribute to educational development for your colleagues

The course is interactive and includes small group work, role play and case study analysis.
